# Guide to upgrading your Leapwork environment

Upgrading to the latest version of Leapwork ensures access to new features, security updates, and performance improvements. Follow the steps below to complete your upgrade successfully.

**Step 1: Review the Release Notes**
Get an overview of what’s included in the latest version, including new features, feature enhancements, changes, and resolved issues.
→ [View release notes](/content/releases/index.html)

**Step 2: Check System Requirements**
Ensure your environment meets the latest system requirements for a smooth upgrade.
→ [View system requirements guide](/content/product/documentation/installation/system-requirements/index.html)

**Step 3: Backup Your Environment (On-Prem only)**
Before upgrading, we strongly recommend taking a full backup of:
- Leapwork Controller
- Databases
- Test Cases / Assets
- Any Configuration Files

→ [How to backup guide - Platform/SME/Commercial](https://support.leapwork.com/s/article/Leapwork-Platform-Database-Backup-steps)

**Note** - If you don't take a full backup before starting your upgrade and corrupt/delete/manipulate your data during the update process, Leapwork will not be able to restore your data to its previous state.

**Step 4: Download the Latest Version**
Download the latest Leapwork version from the Download Center in the Customer Portal. If you are on Leapwork Cloud, you will still need to download this to update your Leapwork Studio application,
→ [Go to Download Center](https://portal.leapwork.com/p/sso)

**Step 5: Plan Your Upgrade Window**
Coordinate with your IT or DevOps teams to schedule the upgrade. Consider:
- Maintenance window
- Impact on running automation flows
- Notification to internal users

**Step 6: Execute the Upgrade**
Follow the step-by-step instructions based on your environment:
- **Cloud Customers** → No action needed. Upgrades are executed by Leapwork for Controller and Agent [if opted], post a confirmation and setting a downtime. Studio would need to be manually updated on the customer machine.
- **On-Prem Customers** → Follow upgrade installer prompts or manual upgrade instructions.
→ [View on-prem upgrade instructions](https://support.leapwork.com/s/article/Upgrading-Leapwork)

**Step 7: Validate Post-Upgrade**
Once your upgrade is complete, perform the following steps to confirm that it has been successful:
- Login to Leapwork Studio
- Validate key repository/test flows
- Confirm Agent configuration and connectivity.
- Confirm Run Lists and schedules
