Error: "Could not access network location" while upgrading Leapwork version

Description:

You may receive error code 1606 or a message "Could not access network location" pointing to some non-existing location while upgrading Leapwork version.

This issue may occur if there is an incorrect setting in one of the following registry subkeys:

• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Resolution:

Important! This section contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it.

1. Take a backup of all automation cases.
2. Completely uninstall the old Leapwork version from the control panel.
3. Restart your system in the case of Windows 7 or 2008.
4. Launch the windows registry:
   1. From the Start menu, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter. If prompted for an administrator password, type the password or provide confirmation.
   2. Or alternatively, click Start, type Run and enter regedit and click OK.

Note - Before deleting a registry key, please ensure to take a backup of the registry key.

5. Once the Registry Editor is open, take a backup of the registry from File - Export - Enter File Name - Save.

6. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

   • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

7. In the right pane, verify that the values match the values in the following table. If each value matches the table, go to step 11.

For Windows XP and for Windows Server 2003

For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008

For Windows 10

8. If any Name, Type, or Value does not match the table, right-click the Value name, and then click Delete.
9. In the left pane, right-click User Shell Folders, point to New, click Expandable String Value, type the Name value that you want from the table, and then press ENTER.
10. Right-click the value that you created, click Modify, type the value in the Value data box, and then click OK.
11. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

12. In the right pane, verify that the values match the values in the following table. If each value matches the table, go to step 16.

For Windows XP and for Windows Server 2003

For Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 10

13. If any Name, Type, or Value does not match the table, right-click the Value name, and then click Delete.
14. In the left pane, right-click User Shell Folders, point to New, click Expandable String Value, type the Name value that you want from the table, and then press ENTER.
15. Right-click the value that you created, click Modify, type the value in the Value data box, and then click OK.
16. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

After restart, the user can proceed with the installation of Leapwork.
