Capturing Dropdowns in a UI Application When Select UI Element Block Isn’t Working

In this article, you will learn about the alternative methods for capturing UI dropdowns when the Select UI Element block is not working as expected. Usually, the Select UI Element block is the perfect solution for picking options in dropdowns, but sometimes it might not function properly. When that happens, you can try a different approach.

In the example below, we are selecting a value for size field from the dropdown:

Now let’s say, while selecting second option from a dropdown, the Select UI Element block isn’t responding, this can happen due to various reasons, such as the application’s design or timing issues. In that scenario, you can use the combination of the Expand UI Element block and the Type Text block as shown below.

Why Use Combination of Expand UI Element and Type Text?

The Expand UI Element block will open the dropdown menu so that all the options are visible. After the dropdown is expanded, the Type Text block will type the name of the option you want to select. This method works better because it replicates how a user would interact with the dropdown, helping to avoid issues that can come up with direct selection.

This is how using the Expand UI Element block to open the dropdown and then the Type Text block to choose an option is a smart approach.
