Welcome to the Self-guided program by Leapwork!
This self-paced initiative is designed to empower you to establish a robust test automation program. By leveraging Leapwork’s tools and resources, you will independently build foundational skills, automate high-priority test cases, and develop a sustainable approach to test automation. Through structured exercises, training modules, and webinars, this program is tailored for skilled teams ready to own their automation journey.
Program goals
- Enable self-sufficiency in setting up and managing test automation.
- Provide a structured learning pathway with resources for all levels.
- Facilitate practical application through guided exercises and milestones.
- Build a foundation for scalable and efficient automation processes.
Program approach
This program will guide you through a seven-phased approach to build your self-sufficiency and achieve your first test cycle using Leapwork. The phases are:
- Self-assessment
- Leapwork installation
- Formal Leapwork training
- Test planning
- Your first test case
- Your first test cycle
- Review and self-reflection
* This checklist provides the detailed tasks you will perform in each phase.
Program Phases
- 1. Self assessment
- 2. Leapwork installation
- 3. Formal training
- 4. Test planning
- 5. Your first test case
- 6. Your first test cycle
- 7. Self reflection
Phase 1: Self-assessment
Goal
Evaluate readiness and identify focus areas for test automation.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
Outcome
Clear understanding of automation priorities and areas requiring skill enhancement.
Complete the readiness
- Ideally assign members to participate in this program from your organization who are motivated business analysts or individuals with prior test automation or development experience.
- Ensure infrastructure is ready with Leapwork components installed.
- Validate connectivity between all relevant machines/applications.
- Ensure agents are configured in Controller.
- Identify 3-5 P2 or P3 test cases to automate.
Document focus areas for the program
- To enable customer personnel to create automation flows of their test cases on their target application under test.
- Schedule their automation flows to be executed as required.
Phase 2: Leapwork installation
Goal
Set up Leapwork components and integrate with the cloud.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 4 hours to complete.
Outcome
Fully installed and operational Leapwork environment.
Leapwork installation
Follow the provided step-by-step installation guides to install your licensed Leapwork version:
- Leapwork Cloud setup
- Leapwork Platform
- Leapwork Enterprise
- Contact Leapwork support for troubleshooting, if needed.
Document focus areas for the program
- To enable customer personnel to create automation flows of their test cases on their target application under test.
- Schedule their automation flows to be executed per required frequency.
Phase 3: Formal Training
Goal
Facilitated web sessions as checkpoints along the training and initial implementation of Leapwork in your environment.
Checklist
These training tasks should take approximately 24 to 60 hours to complete, depending on the training topic areas taken.
Outcome
Completion of a successful first test run using Leapwork for a schedule of 10-15 prioritized test cases, providing a model to follow as you expand testing efforts.
Self-paced Leapwork training
To help you understand which technology you need to comprehend in Leapwork, the table below categorizes a few applications into the 3 technologies Leapwork primarily segregates into:
Web modules
- D365 suite
- Salesforce
- Any in-house or open web application
Desktop modules
- Any .exe software launched on Windows machine
Virtual modules
- Any application accessed via Citrix, or other remote desktop clients
Phase 4: Test planning
Goal
Develop a prioritized plan for initial test automation.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
Outcome
A structured plan for test case automation.
Test planning
List the testing priorities for your team:
- List the test automation priorities for yourself and your team. Include functional areas aligned with your test cases, or prioritize and sequence them based on their importance to critical business functions and QA strategy test coverage (e.g., P1, P2, P3).
Create a detailed test automation plan:
- This might mirror your existing manual test plan or if this doesn’t exist, it would follow your end-to-end critical business functionality.
Phase 5: Automate first test case milestone
Goal
Automate your first high-priority test case using Leapwork tools.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 4 hours to complete.
Outcome
Successful automation of a high-priority test case.
Complete the readiness
- Select the test case for automation. It is suggested to start with low to medium complexity test cases while learning.
- Record your test case using the training lessons learned (Concept covered in Self-Paced training).
- Edit and update individual blocks as necessary (Concept covered in Self-Paced training).
- Add data sources into the flow (Concept covered in Self-Paced training).
- Execute your first test: Run the full flow (Concept covered in Self-Paced training).
- Review the video and test log.
- Correct and revise as necessary.
- Contact Leapwork support for troubleshooting, if needed.
Phase 6: First test cycle milestone
Goal
Execute a complete test cycle for a high-priority function.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 16 hours to complete.
Outcome
A fully executed and validated test cycle.
First test cycle milestone
- Define the run-list: Based on the first successful test case, identify the additional test cases to bundle together to complete the testing for a function (Concept covered in Self-Paced training).
- Iterate through your targeted run-list to record each of your planned test cases.
- Define the sub-phase: Add in test cases to the schedule.
- Execute your first test.
- Review the video and test log.
- Correct and update as necessary.
- Contact Leapwork support for troubleshooting, if needed.
Phase 7: Self-reflection
Goal
Analyze outcomes and plan improvements for future cycles.
Checklist
These tasks should take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
